The Netherlands set a new record for electricity production and exports in 2025, driven by renewable energy growth and rising demand from neighboring countries.
The Netherlands set a new record for electricity production and exports in 2025. The country produced a total of 132 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity that year, almost 10% more than in 2024. This increase was mainly due to increased production from solar power, gas, and coal.
At the same time, the country’s electricity exports have also increased significantly. In 2025, the Netherlands exported about 30 billion kWh of electricity, which is about 25% more than the previous year. The bulk of these exports went to Germany and Belgium, where electricity demand was high.
According to experts, wind power production in Germany’s North Sea has decreased due to low wind speeds. In addition, hydroelectric power production has also decreased due to low water levels in Switzerland and Austria. As a result, Germany has imported more electricity from the Netherlands. On the other hand, imports have increased there as some nuclear power plants in Belgium have reduced production.
In 2025, around 49% of the Netherlands’ electricity generation came from renewable sources, highlighting the important role of renewable energy in the country’s electricity system. At the same time, generation from fossil fuels also increased slightly.
